1. What versions of Windows does WINSelect support?
Windows 2000 Professional SP4, Windows XP Professional SP2, Windows
Vista Ultimate, Business, Home, Home Premium, and Enterprise.
2. Can WINSelect be installed on Windows 2000/2003 Server?
By design, WINSelect is not supported on Windows 2000 or 2003 Server.
Therefore, WINSelect does not block or control applications running on
Terminal Server for users who try to run those applications through
client computers.
3. Is there a migration/upgrade path from an earlier vision of
WINSelect to WINSelect 7?
WINSelect 7 has been completely rewritten; therefore, the user must
uninstall the previous version of WINSelect before installing WINSelect
7. For information regarding upgrade pricing from an earlier version to
v7, please contact our Sales Department.
4. Does WINSelect have an available Maintenance Package?
Yes. This is a 20% additional cost as per other Faronics products.
5. Do I have to reinstall WINSelect if I have the evaluation version
and I purchase the product?
No! You can simply enter the provided License Key after purchase and
WINSelect will become a permanent fully functioning version without any
reinstallation.
6. How is WINSelect accessed once it is installed on the workstation?
Either double-click on the WINSelect icon in the System Tray or use the
hotkey combination: Ctrl + Alt + Shift + F8.
7. How is WINSelect uninstalled?
WINSelect 7 is not found in Add/Remove Programs. It can only be
uninstalled using the .msi installation file.
8. Does Deep Freeze work with WINSelect? Are there any special settings
recommended?
Yes, Deep Freeze and WINSelect work very well together. Be sure to
install and configure WINSelect first and then install and configure
Deep Freeze. If Deep Freeze is already uninstalled, boot the computer
into the Thawed state, install and configure WINSelect, then reboot
into the Frozen state. WINSelect also detects the existence of Deep
Freeze and will provide reminder messages when configuration options
are changed.
9. Why do I need WINSelect if I use Windows Group Policies to lock down
the computer?
WINSelect7 provides several powerful features in addition to policy
management. It provides a Kiosk mode with browser control plus session
timers and printer control. It is also much easier to manage and deploy
than Group Policies, plus it has the ability to import ADM and ADMX
templates.
10. How can I use WINSelect to stop people from saving documents on the
hard disk when they are using Office 2000/XP?
You can block the type of files extension specific to the MS Office
application under the Drives and File Extensions node in the
Administrator.
11. Does WINSelect block CTRL-ALT-DEL?
Yes, this hotkey combination is blocked.
12. How can I copy my settings from one workstation to the next?
Use of the WINSelect template will allow you to export all WINSelect
settings to another installation of the product. Note that passwords
cannot be copied from one workstation to the next and must be entered
manually.
13. Can I configure WINSelect to display the Close button in pop-up
windows in Internet Explorer?
WINSelect does not block pop-up windows for Internet Explorer. Pop-up
windows retain the same Policy and Kiosk settings as the parent window.
WINSelect functions correctly with other pop-up window blocking systems
or add-ons, such as Google Toolbar and/or Windows XP SP2.
14. Is there a way to block toolbars in Netscape 6 or 7 (Java versions)?
Unfortunately WINSelect does not support Java runtime web browsers and
applications such as Opera, OpenOffice, or StarOffice.
15. Why doesn’t the ‘Disable execution of Visual
Basic
Applications’ item option in the Applications/Microsoft
Office
node block the appropriate menu item from Microsoft Office 2003
applications?
This is a known issue in the product. Please check the WINSelect
release notes for a full explanation and workaround for this issue.
16. Can I prevent desktop icons from being deleted by a user?
Yes. In the WINSelect Administrator on the 'Desktop & Windows
Taskbar' node you must check 'Prevent Right click on Desktop' and hide
the Recycle bin. On the Hotkeys node check the Delete key and on the
System node check 'Disable Drag and Drop'.
